The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde
Unit Outline
This is a rough unit outline for the novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (1866). This page is intended to give you some good ideas, not a day-by-day lesson to teaching the entire text. You will have to fill in the details with specific lessons.
Learning Goals:
- Language: Students will be able to dissect words to determine the meaning of their prefixes, roots, and suffixes.
- Language: Students will learn 10-15 new words a week and be able to use those words appropriately in sentences.
- Language: Students will be able to paraphrase complex and archaic sentences from Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.
- Writing: Students will be able to write Toulmin paragraphs featuring a clear claim (topic sentence), evidence, explanation, and a conclusion.
- Writing: Students will be able to write a Toulmin essay in a timed setting.
- Knowledge: Students will be able to explain Jung’s archetypes and Freud’s levels of consciousness and analyze Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde using these theories.
Essential Questions:
- Which of Freud’s levels of consciousness truly control us?
- How do societal norms help define or restrain an individual?
- Is humankind inherently good or evil? Or are these learned traits? Why?
- What do literary and artistic productions of Jungian monsters (like Mr. Hyde) reveal about us as humans?
Routines:
- Each Monday, students will take a vocabulary quiz. After the quiz, the teacher will lead the students through activities to learn the new list of words.
- The words should follow my vocabulary lists. You can add/remove some words to match the words in the novel. However, make sure all of the root words remain.
- Each Friday, students will partake in an in-class written exercise writing Toulmin paragraphs or essays.
- Each Wednesday, students will engage in a structured discussion and will be assessed on an oral rubric.
Assessment:
- Monday vocabulary quizzes.
- Creative Assessment Suggestions: students write an opinion article described on page 3 of resource #1
- Students will regularly be quizzed on the reading through quote identification and paraphrasing of select sentences.
- The students will write a timed in-class essay upon the conclusion of the novel.
Key Lessons:
- Root Analysis: How can you dissect/analyze words for Latin/Greek roots?; How do you determine the meaning of roots?; How can you use roots to predict the meaning of unknown words?
- Toulmin Argumentation: What are the elements of a Toulmin argument?; what are some templates for writing effective Toulmin paragraphs? What are some templates for writing effective Toulmin essays?
- Reading & Paraphrasing Difficult Sentences: What are some tips and tools students should use to understand elongated and archaic sentences? What is a paraphrase? What is the purpose and value of paraphrasing? How can you paraphrase effectively?
- Freudian Theory & Analysis: Who was Freud? What is a general overview of his theory of consciousness? What are some select passages or quotations from his original works that students truly need to read and understand? How can Freud's theories be applied to art and literature?
- Jungian Theory & Analysis: Who was Jung? What is a general overview of his theory of archetypes? What are some select passages or quotations from his original works that students truly need to read and understand? How can Jung's theories be applied to art and literature?
- Societal Norms: What are norms, folkways, mores, and taboos? How do these structures effect society and the individual?
- Active Reading: What is active reading and how is different from passive reading? What are some specific techniques that students can use to be active readers?
- Discussion: What does an effective discussion look like? What are the goals and procedures for effective discussions? What are students expected to produce by the end of an effective discussion?
