The origins of the word "brawny" aren't as fun as some other words I've covered so far. But, it is connected to "bratwurst" (those great German sausages) in that "brat" means ground meat. This word also was influenced by the French word "braon" (a slice of meat).
Brawny muscles or bratwurst. It's all meat!
I love mnemonic connections based on similar sounding words. So, for this video, I really wanted to make a mnemonic device of connecting BRAWN with BRONZE. I tried to work in a clip of Dave Bautista as a metal maniac from "The Man with the Iron Fists", but it just didn't work out.
This is a BRAWNY BRONZE man, a perfect mnemonic.
Of course, if you're American, you can always used the paper towel connection.
Leave it to commercials to hammer home a brand name in association with a vocabulary word!
Vocab Teaching Tip #34:
On the GRE, students are asked to find a word's antonym. This practice is a great way for students to think about a word's meaning (or to test their knowledge of said words).
For example, what is the best antonym of BRAWNY? a. tiny b. compact c. cowardly d. scrawny
Try using this method for teaching, testing, or reinforcing vocabulary knowledge.
P.S. The correct answer is D. scrawny.
