Paradoxes don't pop up often in life. I remember being asked to define a paradox in class once and coming up with an example was difficult. So, I truly hope that the three examples in the video help. There are many more, but they are much more involved and much less fun. Except this one...
Many women know of the French Paradox. How exactly are French people (specifically French women) so skinny when they eat such fattening foods?
French women can somehow eat cheese and cream, pastries, cafe aulait, baguettes, wine, and creme brulee and yet STILL remain skinnier than their American counterparts.
I also neglected to include examples of how people are paradoxical, but it is certainly the case. We are walking contradictions in many regards. Some individuals are incredibly intelligent and yet incredibly naive at the same time. Others act in completely different ways given the context. I'm told that Steve Carrell is a maniac in front of the camera but painfully shy in a party.
They are some Latin roots going in this word, but nothing fancy. PARA- means 'beyond' and DOXA- means 'belief'. But, since these roots don't get a lot of mileage, they weren't included in the video.
Vocab Teaching Tip #33:
When teaching vocabulary words, I find it's helpful to have a ranking system to inform students of how important a word is, how frequently its used, and how formal it is. Next to each word is a number that corresponds with this ranking system:
1 - You will hear and see this word everywhere. 2 - This word is an educated replacement for a more common word. 3 - This word will appear often in college and beyond. 4 - This is a fancy word that will appear in some college-level work. 5 - This word is incredibly fancy and even snobby.
This system is an easy way of giving students an understanding of when and how the word should be used.
Tingo Vocab Videos help students learn one word four ways.
